Lena Newton, born in Munich, studied stage design at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Dresden and at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie Amsterdam and completed the Master Lens Based Media at the Piet Zwart Institute Rotterdam. In Lena Newton's work, video and film are an integral part of the stage concept. Since 2007, she has worked with director Susanne Kennedy on stage designs for performances at the National Theatre in The Hague, the Volksbühne Berlin and the Münchner Kammerspiele. Her productions there include Fegefeuer in Ingolstadt and Warum läuft Herr R. Amok? as well as Drei Schwestern, which was named Stage Design of the Year by the theater magazine Theater Heute in 2019. Lena Newton has also worked in the Netherlands and Germany with directors Sarah Moeremans, Maren E. Bjørseth, Eric de Vroedt and Davy Pieters, and since 2020 with andcompany&co at HAU Berlin. Lena Newton is a regular lecturer at the Amsterdamse Hogeschool voor de Kunsten and since 2019 professor of the stage design class at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. At Schauspiel Hannover in 2021/22 she designed the set for Ich bin nicht tot as part of the Festival Theaterformen. In 2022/23, her work can be seen at Schauspielhaus Bochum in the production Underworlds.
