Schauspielhaus Bochum
Schauspielhaus Bochum has been the city of Bochum’s civic theatre since 1919. The theatre’s profile also includes the provision of spoken drama for children and young people. The Dutch theatre and opera director Johan Simons has been its Artistic Director with effect from the 2018/2019 season. His vision of Schauspielhaus Bochum is of a city theatre for the 21st century where artists from different nations and cultures and different disciplines can find a creative home – where theatre can be found alongside other art forms such as dance, performance, films, installations and music. The core of the theatre is its permanent acting company – one that brings cultural influences from different nations in Europe and around the world with it.
Its four venues are the Schauspielhaus, the Kammerspiele, the Oval Office (formerly Theater Unten) and the Theaterrevier (Zeche Eins). In addition to contemporary interpretations of great classical plays, the Schauspielhaus also presents numerous world premieres and devised works. Schauspielhaus Bochum productions tour to other theatres in Germany and Europe and are invited to international festivals.
