Text
Ferrante's successful work meets Johan Simons' atmospheric theatre world.
The story of two friends, Elena and Lila, begins in Naples in the 1950s: in a poor neighbourhood where political currents and criminal influences collide. Both are exceptionally talented and fundamentally different. Elena, shy and hard-working, uses her intellectual power to have a better future. The non-conformist Lila rebels with courage and creativity against the violent oppression of men. They accompany each other through first loves, sexual experiences, motherhood and political struggles - always striving to be better than the other.
Meine geniale Freundin paints a vivid picture of Italy during the social and political upheavals of the 20th century. It is the true-life story of two women who always insist on determining their own lives - even if the price they have to pay is sometimes very high.
