Lies Pauwels, born in 1968 in Gent (Belgium), is a director and actress. She worked closely with Alain Platel and Arne Sierens. For her role in Freetown after Rob de Graaf she was awarded the Colombina as best actress of the season in 2011 in Amsterdam. Since 2001 Lies Pauwels has concentrated mainly on her own creations, for which she works largely on the basis of improvisations, but controlled improvisations. She is always prepared to take risks that the normal operation of a theatre immediately shys away from for sheer self-protection. Her performance White Star was awarded Best Performance at the Kontakt International Festival in Torun (Poland) in 2005. Her productions have included Manchester International Festival, Singapore Arts Festival, LIFT Festival in London, National Theatre of Scotland and Theater Hetpaleis in Antwerp, where the original production Het Hamiltoncomplex was created in 2015.
