Stefan Hunstein, born in 1957 in Kassel, studied acting at the Hochschule für Musik und darstellende Kunst in Stuttgart from 1979 to 1982. He was subsequently engaged at the theatres of Essen and Freiburg and from 1986 to 1990 at the Schauspielhaus Bochum (Artistic director Frank-Patrick Steckel). From 1990 to 2001 he was a member of Dieter Dorn's ensemble at the Münchner Kammerspiele and from 2001 to 2010 at the Bayerisches Staatsschauspiel. From 2010 to 2015 he was a member of the ensemble of the Münchner Kammerspiele under Johan Simons. Guest engagements have taken him to the Deutsches Theater Berlin, the Salzburg Festival and the Ruhrtriennale, among others. In 2007 he was awarded the Kurt Meisel Preis. In addition, he realized several works of his own as a director. At the same time Stefan Hunstein is active as a photographer and visual artist. His works have been shown in group and solo exhibitions, among others at the Kunstverein München, the Städtische Galerie Lenbachhaus, the Kulturpalast in Warsaw, the Haus der Kunst and the Franz Marc Museum. In 1991 he was awarded the Deutscher Photopreis. Since the 2018/2019 season he has returned to Schauspielhaus Bochum as a member of the ensemble. Since September 2022, he has also been Director of the Performing Arts Department of the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts.
